Ludwig Power Trio: Maple Classic, Supraphonic 400 and Black Beauty Snare Drums
(Ludwig | Posted 2007-07-10)
Played by generations of drummers in every possible musical situation, Ludwig’s premium-quality, performance-proven snare drums have always been the right drums at the right time. Ludwig snares supported the creation and development of many modern drumming styles and they continue to meet the needs of contemporary touring and session players. Perhaps the most iconic of these advanced, American-made instruments are the Black Beauty, Supraphonic 400 and Maple Classic models. These drums, along with a wide selection of popular Ludwig Snare Drum models, are currently available at special prices at participating Ludwig dealers.
The 5x14˝ Ludwig Black Beauty was one of the first specialty snare drums ever created. Developed in the mid 1920’s, Black Beauties gave players a heavier, higher-quality and superior-sounding solid brass shell than was currently available. Today, not only do the drums remain highly collectible, they feature a host of Ludwig upgrades and a choice of polished, hammered and engraved black-nickel finishes.
Chosen by countless drumming legends for groundbreaking concerts and recordings, the Supraphonic 400 Series was the "go-to" snare drum throughout much of the late 1950’s jazz and early 60’s rock eras. The drums are still noted for their unique balance of power, sensitivity and depth; the 5x14˝ and 6˝x14" chrome over brass (COB) models with their trademark "Imperial" lugs remain among the most recorded snare drums in musical history.
Although wood snares have remained popular throughout Ludwig’s nearly 100-year history, it was the Maple Classic line that helped established the fat backbeat and deep grooves of pop and R&B music in the 1970’s and 80’s. The Classic’s 9-ply, all-maple shell features the clarity and warmth players have come to expect from maple drums plus the projection and musicality that have maintained Ludwig’s well-deserved reputation for snare drum innovation and excellence.
Available in a wide selection sounds, sizes and styles— from piccolo, standard and deep dish models to lacquer, wrapped and exotic finishes— Ludwig wood and metal snare drums continue to set the standard on the world’s stages and recording studios.
