Collings D-1A Reviews 5 / 5 based on 1 reviewsI'm the guy who reviewed the Collings D-3...... And just recently traded a Martin D-18V and HD-28 for a Collings D-1A with a 1 3/4 inch nut. Wildwood Guitars in Louisville, Colo. ..... what a fantastic store ..... Great people, stock and website......
I had to have this D-1A....... two weeks earlier I had sold my 1948 Martin D-18 because I had a feeling that this "renaissance" of luthiery that we are experiencing is producing some of the greatest guitars ever... vintage or not. I think I'm right. This D-1A (adirondak or 'red' spruce top) is a CANNON .... better than the vintage Martin, hands down... Think what it will acheive in the next twenty years..... scary.
the 1 3/4 nut is hard if you're not used to it. Going back and forth between 1 11/16 and 1 3/4 is a bit tricky .... but 3/4 is great for solo crosspicking and ringing out a D-18 (style) for all it's worth.... 11/16 is great as a rosewood hot-rod fast and fat.
Impeccable. This D-1A has an Ebony peghead Veneer.... Haven't seen that before ... no special indication on the label .... still trying to figure that out.
The owner of the store said this ... " I have a pre-war D-18 and this Collings is 95% of that.... and it's brand new .... just think what it will be ...... " I a lot of Colllings guitars get that..... grierfan rated this unit on 2003-10-02.
