This is the Epiphone A-style 8-string mandolin in black finish and chrome hardware. The body is made of spruce, the set neck is mahogany and the fretboard is rosewood.
I found this used in my local music shop for $80. It held tune and sounded decent for my first adventure in learning to play the mandolin.
I liked that Epiphone built a no frills mandolin. Well worth picking up if you are unsure if the mandolin is the instrument for you.Action felt good, the tuners did their job of holding tune.
The tone is just ok. Could have been better, but was a little harsh. What can you expect for $80?
The pickguard will rattle a bit when played hard. Depending on your technique this may or may not pose a problem. Upon a closer look a screw vibrates against the body under the pickguard. I'm sure you can get a thin piece of felt or something to prevent this without damaging the instrument.
Well built for the money. The frets were nice, the action was good, hardware does its job.
An all around great budget mandolin. Plays and sounds as a mandolin should. Everything you need and nothing you do not! Billy rated this unit on 2010-12-16.
