Hohner Essential EL-SD Plus Reviews 5 / 5 based on 1 reviewsSo the Hohner Essential line has recently crossed my path and really impressed me. Their goal was to make a great sounding budget instrument that you won't mind bringing out to the bar and throwing down on.
I have owned this guitar for about 2 months. It is $279.99 for the natural dread without any cutaway or electronics.
It sounds and plays fantastic! The special nut which is referred to as the NVI tuning system. The nut sits on the actual fretboard and has a pivoted notch cut out for each string. The goal is to get the open strings in tune with the upper frets. This is not a gimmick, the guitar has beautiful intonation!
It is a 'no frills' acoustic guitar, so there isn't any binding, pickguard or fancy inlay. The spruce top is a very 'wild' looking top. I'm not sure if I'd call it matched, I found it to be very appealing, but if you're trying to blend in with the same boring looking guitar as everyone else you may be let down.
Just a hair smaller than most acoustics, the scale measures in at 25.5 inches. It felt great in my hands as I predominantly play an electric guitar. The finish is smooth and satiny. I'd imagine it'd scratch easy, but hey, people are paying good money for beat up looking guitars these days.
If you are looking for a great couch strummer this is it! The guitar feels as good as it sounds. Billy rated this unit on 2011-09-25.
