I also play keyboards, other strings, percussion, and wind instruments. I compose original pieces ranging from single instrument to orchestral symphony, do recording & CD production in a home studio. I am not in a group at this time, but do jam on occcasion.
I have been intrigued with fretless instruments for some time, even more so after learning to play the oud.
Musicians Friend had a clearance sale on this fretless bass a couple of months ago and the price was extremely low: $79.99.
I expected to find some potentially glaring defect on a "blem" instrument. However, I was pleased to find that the only thing I had to do was make a minor adjustment of string height using the instrument's screws for that purpose in order to alleviate some fretboard contact in the lower end.
I love playing it: it's a well-made, easy playing bass, much better than one I have used for several years. Bass is not my primary instrument, but this fretless is going to be a mainstay on my recordings from now on. Prior to this acquisition, I used a guitar synth to produce a fretless bass sound.
Have not found anything I don't like about it.
It has a very smooth neck action, sounds fantastic, and has a beautiful, faultless metallic charcoal finish.
It is also very lightweight and easy on the shoulder.
Overall, it is a fine quality instrument that was an exceptional bargain. I am very pleased with it in all aspects. In addition, I ordered the recommended gig bag for $19.99, which more than surpassed my expectation for quality of construction, padding, and features such as sewing and variety of storage pockets. This bass was my first purchase from Musicians Friend, and I am very satisfied.
