Rogue SX100B Bass Reviews
3 / 5 based on 2 reviewsThe SX 100B by Rogue is a beginner electric
bass. I bought it as a gift for my husband
for Christmas in 2003.
Why the Rogue?
Well, let's put it this way--the dude can't
clap and sing at the same time! But when I showed him a bass line on my acoustic guitar, he played it it rhythm and with decent timing-- I thought, 'this could be it! He can't clap, he can't sing, maybe he can bass!!'
I said all that to say, if he ended up
quitting, the $79.99 was worth trying and finding out.
I ordered it at Musician's Friend online just days before Christmas and it came in time. I got with it, the Rogue beginner bass amp, RB-20B (which sucked big time)and the whole deal was $120.
What did I like the most? The price--the thing was $80! Beyond that?
The bass sounds very very good. It sounds
way better than 80 bucks. The scale was 34,
which surprised me a bit, being a beginner model, (which is often shorter) and the simple volume, tone, with the p style pickup is really more than enough for a
beginner to contend with.
It comes in black, red, and blue; maple neck, rosewood board, dot inlays, 2 x 2 tuners.
There was nothing I had to say that was negative about the bass, but the Rogue amp was very bad--don't get it! I ended up donating this bass and amp to a church,
( not because I had any problems but I was teaching another beginner there who needed one) but I bought my husband another SX100 (last one in black, this one in red) in a pre-pack with a Drive 20 bass amp (much, much better).
I got the two (bass and Drive amp) for $145 in February of 2004.At this time, the SX100 has gone up in price to $129 and the Drive 20 is $69.99.
If I had to be picky, (and it's hard to be
because the deal was such a good value),
there is a visible knot on the neck, the
paint on the headstock shows bleeds, and the P pickups are a few milimeters crooked.
None of this bothers me at all. I think the essentials are solid--they just built it to
keep costs down, but the bass sounds good.
I would buy this bass for any beginner.
I'm not just saying it! I bought 2 of them within 40 days. It's worth every penny.
Even at the new price of $129, it's a great
starter instrument. Don't get it though if:
1) you are a young person who isn't at least 5 feet tall--it will be very uncomfortable for you, maybe even discouraging. 2) if you are a petite female or have very small hands-- you also will find the full scale challenging.
