Hands-on review: ZVEX Effects Fuzz Probe

The Orange County Drum and Percussion Venice 4-piece shell pack includes: * 22' x 20' kick drum 12' x 8' rack tom * 16' x 14' floor tom * 14' x 6' snare drum * Remo Coated on snare * Remo Clear on toms. I am a student, musician, writer, and pretty good line dancer residing in beautiful Nashville, TN. I've been a drummer and guitar player for the past 10 years of my life and have began engineering and producing in the past 4. I currently play drums for the band Brookline and you can see me rockin' an Orange County Drum and Percussion or Mapex kit decked out with Zildjian K Hybrids.

I found this kit in mid 2009 while searching for a good kit to keep in our rehearsal studio as well as a very portable kit for local gigs. I purchased it at Guitar Center for $599.00

The first thing that stands out about this kit is it's cannon of a bass drum. Measuring in at 22' x 20' it provides a great mix of punch and boom and features a virgin shell. The shells are all Basswood which is a very strong and can take a pretty good beating and well as heat and cold expansion for those of you who accidentally leave your kit in the car after a late night gig (not that this is ever good). Once I changed the heads on the toms I was able to get them sounding incredible. Even though the high tom is rather small, it sounds huge and compliments the kit well.

The snare that comes with this kit is somewhat sub-par. The Basswood works well for the kit but kind of fails when it comes to the snare. It's a very thin sound and very difficult to get even tension from all of the lugs to get a good tone to last.

The snare lever and fasteners feel like cheap plastic and never seem to hold tight. The rims on the entire kit are also rather wimpy and have a nasty sound if you like to do little clicks on your rims like I do. The legs on the kick drum are also a bit shaky and never feel very sturdy leading me to always secure down the kick someway.

Bottom Line? This kit would be great for beginners or intermediate players wanting something they're not to worried about getting beat up while gigging. If you replace the snare, as I did, and get new heads, you'll have yourself a pretty good sounding kit for under a grand
