T.J.S. Custom Drums 20 Ply Maple Vented Snare Reviews  5 / 5 based on 1 reviewsI purchased this drum which is 14x5.5 from Tom Schultz in Mesa Az for $700. He is employed with Milano Music and sells his custom drums through them and other stores throughout Arizona. I had been purchasing equipment there for some time and have always noticed his work. While I was in one day, he showed me a vented snare that he had made for a customer and I fell in love. Until that point, I had never had the opportunity to play a vented snare and was always interested in hearing one up close. So I bought one.
The snare seems very well made. I ordered it in a natural satin stain finish. It has 2.3mm hoops and tube style lugs. The volume of crack that it produces is phenominal. It has its own unique voice when compared to non vented snares. When you combine 20 plys with thick hoops and vents, be prepared to wear ear plugs.
There is absolutely nothing that I don't like about this snare. However, since people will be reviewing this I will say one thing. The snare is meant to be tuned very tight. This is not a snare that has a wide tuning range. It's whole purpose is to be very dry and loud. You will not find any low fat sound with this snare. Some people may not like that, but I love it for the genre of music that I play. (Rock)
Seems well built. I have not had any problems with it so far. I have had it for about a week now and have been really laying into it. I love the natural stain on the drum.
Tom Schultz has a great reputation throughout Arizona as an excellent craftsman and reasonable business man. He doesn't over charge and really takes pride in his work. Even people that work at the local guitar center have told me about how good his stuff is. I know some people might think that $700 is alot for a vented snare, but if you think about it, orange county snares start at $1,000 if your lucky. Bottom line, I love the drum and would recommend T.J.S. Custom Maple Drums to anyone. If you are ever in the phoenix area check them out. janitor man rated this unit on 2005-07-06.
