I work in a music store and have all brands at my disposal. I thought I'd check out the Roy Haynes for 1 gig and am loathed to anyone ever trying to take it from me. There are a lot of great snares out there, however anyone like myself who is fortunate to use it live just once, will not be able to part with it. For the money....I most certainly have yet to find a more beautifully unique sounding snare at any price.......
I traditionally have used Maple snares both large and piccolo styles due to their inherent lovely warmth. Metal based snares never really interested me....until this baby. It has the best qualities (sounds)of both Maple and Brass (even though it is copper)without the shortcomings. Beautifully constructed, enormous versatility and looks smarter than a Maclaren F1.
It would be nice to see your magnificent new Roy Haynes Signature Snare turn up in more than just a crappy cardboard box with very little protection, apart from that though I have nothing to fault about this unit
The hand tempering on the Copper Shell is exhuberantly done. Typical Yamaha motorcycle engineered hoops and lugs (very solid) with high quality chrome plating. Overall the unit is produced extremely well.
I had no intentions of even looking at a new snare let alone buying one, however when the oportunity arose to try the said item at a gig and was blown away with it, I sold both my 14x6.5" and 13x4" Maple snares and purchased the Roy Haynes immediately. Everyones' choice in anything is personal to their own tastes, but for me this snare is truly DYNAMITE....!!!!!!!! Rob M rated this unit on 2007-07-12. I have been playing for two years. I have been searching for this snare drum for a while now. I had always heard that copper snare drums produced a very wood like tone but with the bite of metal. I came across it at Milano Music in Mesa Az and picked it up for $495 flat.
First of all, the hammered copper finish just makes this drum absolutely beautiful. Aside from the looks, the tone is very unique. I also own a regular yamaha copper snare and the hammering on the Haynes model gives it a completely different sound. The best way to describe is very dry and dark. The sound is almost too dark for me because I love very tight and poppy snare drums. Other than that, it could be easily considered a very versitile snare drum that could be used on many different types of music.
The only thing that I was not happy with was the internal mute that came with the drum. I have never owned or played a drum with this before but decided to purchase it anyway. In my opinon it kills too much of the sound when applied but is just fine when it is off. If you do decide to purchase this drum one thing that definately needs to be done is changing the snares. The ones that came with the snare were absolutely horrible. I changed them to some pursounds and it made a ton of difference. I was a little dissapointed that yamaha did not include professional quality snares on this drum for the price I paid.
This thing is built like a tank and is pretty heavy. It is not overwhelming but its got some poundage on it. All of the products that I have aquired from Yamaha have always been constructed top notch.
When all is considered I am very happy with my purchase. I love collecting snare drums and the Haynes signatures adds a very unique and distinctive sound to my arsenal. I would definately recommend buying this drum since I truly believe that it could be applied in lots of musical applications with no problems at at all. janitor man rated this unit on 2006-02-12.
