Gibson Epiphone Special Plus Reviews  3 / 5 based on 1 reviewsI don't own this guitar but have been using it for about 4 months now. It was loaned to me by a friend while I get my new guitar. I have looked up the price of this guitar on the net and it can be bought for less than $200 making this an intro guitar I suppose. I think the present version is called the Special II Plus.
The Paint while not a buffed nitro job is still nice. The balance seems good and the sound it makes is clear. Overall it is not a bad looking axe. This one is solid red with red on the back of the neck and a black painted headstock front set off with chrome hardware. It looks nice.
Ok, so it looks nice for a sub $200 guitar and sound isn't bad but now for the bad part. The tuners will not stay in tune. Yes, tuners. They seem to either turn or perhaps even slip. I've stretch the strings over and over to make sure. I have to tune it every time I play. I've had strings perhaps a step off. This isn't string stretch. There also isn't much difference in sound between the bridge and neck pup. I don't know if this is due to pups or the body. It is heavy but doesn't have very good sustain (decent but not great). There is no contour on the back and the body wood for the neck bolt is very thick making it hard to use frets 18-22.
I think I've covered this already for the most part. I will say that I think the neck pocket is too large. I can see a bunch of gap around it and the neck. I think this is why the sustain isn't real good.
Even with all I've said I think for the price its better than many intro guitars I've seen. I'm sure there are better but this one isn't bad at all. I would suggest a tuner upgrade and I think this would be a keeper. JTB rated this unit on 2003-01-25.
