MasterTone Pick-ups VHO and SFA Review
I got an email the other day and was asked if I would like to do a review on some new pick-ups called MasterTone. I know what you’re thinking; this review is going to be just another hype on a new piece of music gear. Well, get your reading glasses on, find a nice comfortable place on the couch and sit down cause this is not going to be your normal review. I received the pick-ups in the mail and said to myself, ok, here we go another painstaking trial and tribulation of installing a set of pick-ups, I open the box, and the first thing I said to myself was, WOW a really great looking set of pick-ups. Also included in the box was a plug-in quick release cable, pre-wired switchcraft output jack, a keystone 9-volt battery clip, a tone capacitor, and the screws and springs. Then I picked up the set of installation instructions, which also comes with each pick-up. I took a quick glance at the instructions, and proceeded to pick up my t rusty soldering iron. I decided to install the pick-ups in an early 80’s Explorer. Mastertone mentioned on their website that we all know every guitar has its own sonic signature and their pick-ups are designed to sense the body resonance of your guitar and use it, even the difference between a maple and rosewood fingerboard can be heard. So using the Explorer this should really be a good test for the pick-ups. After a while when I was done with the installation, I kicked back and took a good look at the guitar, I must say the black chrome pick-ups really looked great. Now off to the studio anxiously waiting to hear the results. I picked out a few different amps and proceeded to plug my guitar into a JCM 800 2x12 100 watt. The first time I heard these pick-ups, I was totally amazed. The tones that came out of that guitar blew me away. What I heard was great bottom end punch, incredible high end, and massive tone. The bridge pick-up sustained beautifully. The neck pick-up gave me unbelievable rhythm tones. Then I was off to a Plexi Marshall with a 4x12 bottom. Again, I was amazed with the range of tone at my disposal. I could get everything from the bluesiest blues to the heaviest metal. After I made the rounds of every amp in the studio, from Marshall to fender to Vox, etc., I made my way into the control room saying to myself, “Let’s see how it will sound through some guitar processors.” After putting it through everything I could, there is one thing I have to say, These Things Are Great! I have been playing music for quite some time, and It’s really heaven to run across something like this. These humbuckers are made pretty well. Two handwound coils with twelve American made alnico 5 magnets. They also feature hand made NASA standard in-built circuit boards. All pick-ups are balanced for correct output at neck and bridge possessions. The coils are completely incased in Mil-Spec RF shielding material for noiseless operation. They also are double potted in wax for one hour and resin filled for microphonic feedback resistance. They come in chrome, gold, or black chrome. So all in all, these pick-ups are pretty amazing. These are not your run of the mill after market pick-ups. If you take your guitar playing seriously, you should seriously think about looking into MasterTone.
