Hands-on review: ZVEX Effects Fuzz Probe

This is the Scratch Pad. It protects the back of guitar with a thin velvet strip where scratches or buckle rash would normally occur. Many different patterns are available from a simple plain to a skull or catchy phrase. I own the Skull, Rock Hand and Panther patterns for my guitars.

I saw the product in a Musician's Friend catalog and thought it would be worth a shot. The Scratch Pad is only $20 and is well worth investing in. It pays for itself if you plan on reselling your instrument later.

It is lightweight and thin. You quickly will forget it is even on your guitar. The velvety finish on the pad sort of anchors itself to jeans which I find helpful when playing live.

The only thing I would correct would be the reusable back when the Scratch Pad is not in use is a pain to line up perfectly. You want to keep the backing on so dirt doesn't ruin the clingy side that you put on your guitar.

Thin and light, but not cheap. The Scratch Pad looks like it will take some wear and tear.

If you like your instruments to stay in pristine shape or you like to wear big hacking rock n roll belt buckles, you should consider this product. It does exactly what it says it does and does not leave any residue on your instrument. If you are playing a $100 instrument and don't mind a little buckle rash than you don't need to bother with this.

First I want to say that I hope this review doesn't show up like one long paragraph because that’s not the way I write. I’ll separate the paragraphs with dashes just in case. ------------------ Anyway, I'm an active Musician, 80s Cover Band so playing Tele and LP. ------------------

I got my first pad from a friend back in June for my b-day…I’ve bought two since then at Guitar Center for $19.95 and now I’m going to play Santa for X-Mass. ---------------------

All I can say is that the Belt-Buckle Rash and the marks made by my pocket rivet on the Scratch Pad are good indicators of what would have happened to my finish. ------------------- Secondly, I like the graphics that they are putting on them now. I have a "GOD BLESS THE USA" Scratch Pad on my Tele and a "THANK YOU" Scratch Pad on my Les Paul. I flip my guitars over towards the audience at the end of the sets and these good sized graphic messages really get the crowd roaring. ------------------- I almost forgot one of the greatest things that I figure out on my own… you can custom cut them with a good pair of scissors to make removable pick guards. --------------------

I wish they made a little bigger size for my acoustic. Apparently, it's coming in 2008. -------------------

The product is made extremely well, a long awaited and brilliant idea. Actually, you can see a pretty cool product demo at their website, ScratchPadUSA ----------------- Wait, one more thing, just like they say on their website, it clings “Gently but Securely” without any adhesive (although I don’t know how) and… if it ever gets dirt or guitar polish, etc. on the cling side, I clean it with soap and water and it clings again as well as the day I got it. Supposedly you can renew it this way forever! --------------------------

I've never been able to understand the attitude that by damaging your finish you're giving it character. Some of the older vintage axes show roadworthiness because there was no solution so it was easy to reside to the fact that your guitar would develop some type of "character." -------------------------- My guess is anybody who doesn’t care about their finish never owned a brand spankin’ new ax…you wouldn’t key the finish on a brand new car would you?
