Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifer Head Reviews 5

I'm giving it a 9 overall. It would benefit from an onboard reverb, just to give a bit of depth. The price is a bit expensive, but for being a nice handmade American tube amplifier with a lot of features, it's priced just right. This amp will go from Who and Hendrix to Morbid Angel and Bloodbath, so it can nail nearly any type of distorted tone.... [read more on Audiofanzine]

If you take the time to work with it and want it for a very specific thing (high gain stuff) do it and you won't regret it, just don't go get it expect a tone of versatility! [read more on Audiofanzine]

If a huge amount of versatility isn't needed (ie: If you don't need prestine cleans and a great low/mid gain tone), these amps are EXTREMELY hard to beat at their price. Why these sell for less than the 3 channel models is beyond me, as they sound about 5 million times better. The gain is clear and brutal, a recipe for destruction. These amps... I bought this amp off of ebay for 1100. After reviewing many amps before purchasing this one I figured this was the way to go and I am pleased with the decision I have made. I have the head hooked up to 2 2X12 oversized recto cabs and it sounds great. I play all types of music ranging from Classic rock to jazz to metal to the more modern "metalcore". I do like a little bit more gain however so I just hooked up a gainiac and ran a boss overdrive and it sounds perfect. I am about to retube the amp with some El34's just to try it out but the 6L6's are perfect for now. So far it seems like Dimarzzio pickups are the best match for me with the Mesa head but that could be just me. Seymours are alright, the Dragon 2 pickups in the other PRS are better but the Dimarzio pickups in the Parker are just flat out great. Haven't tried out EMG 81's yet.

Everything, from the clean channel's vintage sound to low end sound of the red "distorted" channel.

Could be a little bit less muddy but hey I still love the amp.

Built as if I could hit it with hammer over and over.

The amp was a really great buy for me. If you are looking for a little bit more of a low end you might think about getting a Bogner uberschall because that head and a oversized recto cab = heaven for you. But hey I wouldn't be buying another Mesa Head and cab if I didn't like the one I have now.
