Sony DVPK85P DVD Karaoke Player Reviews 4

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years but I am not currently in a band.

I paid $99 for this unit at Costco. Was looking for something inexpensive to play Karaoke for an upcoming New Years Eve party but didn't want to get one of those cheap children looking units and didn't want to spend hundreds for a VocoPro or other professional player. This was just the right price.

It's sleek, attractive and functional. It plays DVD, DVD-R+R, CD-G, CD-R, CD's etc. Just about everything. The unit is solid and has controls for changing the key of the song so it's easier to sing. It even has a feature that scores your performance. Although the unit has built in microphone jacks, I prefer to hook up a wireless Shure microphone and run it through an existing PA system I have. I also like the remote that comes with the unit as it gives you direct control to nearly all of the karaoke functionality.

My biggest complaint with this unit is that it is not mp3 compatible. For parties, I would like to spin a CD-R disc loaded with MP3's, whenever the Karaoke function is not being used, but this unit does not support mp3. This is probably the only issue I have with it.

I think the unit is well built as far as electronics go these days. It's a Sony, so I've come to expect a certain level of quality. I wouldn't drop this unit on concrete rom 6 feet up, but I think it can take a few reasonable bumps here and there. The controls, interfaces and jacks are all high quality.

For under $100, this is probably your best bet for a stand-alone karaoke player if you just want a unit for hosting parties etc. It's in the perfect price range and it's not cheap like some of the units you'd find in Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.
